Color Postcards to Promote Events

Rick Borstein, FAAS Webmaster

My host club— the Greater Chicago Cichlid Association— has had great luck using an online postcard printer— Postcard Services —to print color postcards. Here is a recent example:

Postcard Services handles everything for you:

  1. Design
You can use their simple-to-use online design tool or upload your own PDF

  2. Labels
Upload your mailing list and the address info is checked and printed directly on the card

  3. Mailing
You can take advantage of bulk rates even if you don’t have a bulk rate permit.

For $242.50 (Price as of 1/14/2007), you can print and mail 500 full-color 4" by 6" postcards!

GCCA generally mails about 1000 postcards for our events. Postcard Services does all of the work for $442.50. We used to spend about $320 on a black and white card and spent hours labeling and stamping them. While Postcard Services is more expensive, we save tons of time and the results make our club look great.

Color really attracts customers!

You do need to plan ahead a bit. I generally create the postcard about 30 days prior to the event. Postcard Services will send me an online proof in about two days. After I approve that— via fax or phone— the postcard goes to the printer.

The card goes in the mail by bulk rate about three weeks before the event. Almost everyone receives the postcard about two weeks before the auction or swap meet.

Postcard Services does offer a variety of different sizes of postcards. We use the smallest size which is 4" by 6" which can be inexpesively mailed using the USPS postcard rate. They also offer other sizes such as 5.5" by 8.5" and 5.5" by 11".
